How in the heck is it already the end of January? Yet at the same time, it feels like it has lasted 10x as long as months normally feel. Time is weird like that. The older I get, the faster it seems to go, and I wonder just how fast it’ll get someday and if it’ll ever slow down.
Now, I’m no “lifestyle blogger” or “fashion blogger” or “beauty blogger” or “influencer”, but I wanted to share some of my favorite things throughout the year (starting with January, obviously) because sharing is caring and who knows, what has helped me might help someone else. Hopefully you find something new to add to your life!
Jane The Virgin is my favorite show for January! I know, I know, I’m late to the party… This show has been out for a while but Ryan and I finished it a couple of weeks ago. We watched the majority of it in January due to surgery, sickness, and snow (the 3 S’s of January), we were home a lot and had a lot of time to watch. The show is based on telanovelas (hispanic soap operas and story telling) and I LOVED its incorporation of Spanish! It made me miss living in Spain for sure, and being surrounded by Spanish. We did have the subtitles on, but I tried my best to listen and translate what the characters were saying in my head instead of just reading the subtitles. It is on Netflix, if you’re interested!
This one has been my favorite for a while, but since this is my first post about my favorites, I had to share it for January! The Basement Yard is my favorite favorite favorite podcast. I listen every Monday morning while I get ready for work and honestly, it’s my favorite way to start my week. The description of the podcast on Apple Podcasts is literally this:
The Basement Yard is a podcast ran by me, Joe Santagato. I would write a long description about what this podcast will be about but I’m not even sure.. Enjoy!
It’s Joe Santagato and Danny LoPriore just talking about the most random things, but it’s funny and honestly I feel like it gives me some insight into the male mind..
WARNING: There is explicit content, so this podcast is NSFW (not safe for work).
I haven’t listened to much music this month…and if I do, it’s not really new music. But one new song that I’m loving at the moment is Some Kind of Disaster by All Time Low. The playlist I listen to most is one I created myself called NO TEARS LEFT TO CRY and it’s filled with power anthems that I love to jam out to whenever I need a confidence/mood boost. You can check out that playlist by clicking the link below.
I don’t read much..but one of my goals for the year is to read more. I did finish a whole book in January!! It was called “Do The F*cking Work: Lowbrow Advice For High Level Creativity” by Jason Bacher and Brian Buirge of Good F*cking Design Advice (GFDA). This book is full of great, no BS advice that tells it like it is. Some of it is about design, but most of it is about how to get off your booty and chase after your dreams. It is full of aesthetic page designs and lots of red, black, white, silver, and swearing. 10/10 recommend for any of my creative friends because it really is a good read!
WARNING: In case you haven’t figured this out already, there is a wide usage of the “F” word. Sorry not sorry if you’re offended.
Would this post really be complete without my current coffee obsession? Since it’s cold outside (because winter, duh) I’ve become reobsessed with simple, plain lattes. That’s right, just espresso and milk. The flavor brings me back to Spain (can you tell I’ve been reminiscing my time abroad lately?) because they don’t use syrups in Europe. If I do feel like putting a lil’ somethin’-somethin’ in my latte, it’s some simple brown sugar and cinnamon (as in the real deal, not a syrup titled “brown sugar cinnamon”). My favorite way to de-stress is to walk to my favorite local coffee shop and sip on a latte while drawing on my iPad, reading, or working on a side project. It’s my “me” time and I wouldn’t want to spend it any other way, to be honest.
My current go-to breakfast is two eggs on a Joseph’s Pita Bread!
Recently I’ve been trying to make meals that have leftovers that I can have for lunches during the week so that I don’t have to meal prep a separate item for lunches for the week and also, that keeps me from eating the same thing every day. I did however, try a zucchini soup that I prepped specifically to have for lunches. It was really good and was 0 sp! (Unless you add cheese).
It is cold and I’ve been craving comfort food. My favorite since starting WW is Crockpot Chicken and Gravy. It is SO easy and put it over some Trader Joe’s Mashed Potatoes (also super easy to make) and BAM. Instant comfort food. We eat this at least once every two weeks and it makes enough for me to have leftovers for lunch. I’d probably make it more if I could but I don’t want Ryan to get burnt out on it, so I try to only make it once every other week.
My current favorite snack is stuff paired with Jif Whips. I had seen others post about Jif Whips before but had never found it/tried it until recently and I have to say, it definitely is worth the hype. It’s lower in points than regular peanut butter and tastes just as good. I like to pair it with a sliced apple or pretzel sticks or occasionally a Built Bar if I’m feeling really hungry and needing something super sweet.
My current favorite dessert is the Peanut Butter Built Bar. It is like a “healthy” protein-filled Snickers and I savor every bite. I also enjoy the Peanut Butter Brownie Built Bars but if I had to pick one or the other, I’d pick the regular PB. I also have been enjoying Halo Top Ice Cream recently. I loved the Peanut Butter Cup one and decided to give some other flavors a shot. I’m not crazy about the other one’s I’ve purchased so far.. (Peanut Butter & Jelly, Movie Theater, and Caramel Macchiato) but luckily, they’re packed with protein and so I only need a few bites to fill me up. Are you seeing a theme here? I’m on a PB kick right now.
My current favorite game to play on my phone is Scattergories Blitz. I always loved playing Scattergories as a kid and so now that I can play it on my phone against other people is really fun to me. Ryan plays with me sometimes but he doesn’t like it as much as I do. We also really enjoy the game called Best Fiends. It is a puzzle game and some of the levels are pretty challenging and really make you think. We were really into this game in May of 2018 when we went to Ireland and we’ve rediscovered it and both have been playing it again.
